Il
Joker è un personaggio e super-cattivo nei fumetti della
DC Comics. Creato da Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger e Bob Kane,
egli appare inizialmente in Batman N. 1, nella primavera del
1940. La creazione del personaggio è contestata, in quanto
sia Kane che Robinson hanno entrambi rivendicato il design del
Joker ma hanno riconosciuto la calligrafia della mano di Finger.
Destinato a essere ucciso durante la sua prima apparizione,
il Joker è stato risparmiato dall'intervento editoriale,
che consente al personaggio di diventare il peggior nemico del
supereroe di Batman.
Durante
le sue apparizioni, il Joker è interpretato come un personaggio
molto intelligente, maestro del crimine. Inizialmente introdotto
come uno psicopatico con un deformato, senso sadico dell'umorismo,
il personaggio è diventato un jolly imbarazzante nel
1950 in risposta alla regolamentazione dell'Autorità
Comics Code, prima di essere ricondotto alle sue radici più
scure. Conosciuto come l'arcinemico di Batman, il Joker è
stato responsabile per la maggior parte delle storie che definiscono
questo personaggio, tra cui la paralisi della alleato di Batman
e la figlia del commissario James Gordon, Batgirl (Barbara Gordon)
e presunto omicidio di Jason Todd, il secondo Robin. Il Joker
ha dato diverse versioni del suo passato durante i suoi sette
decenni di pubblicazione, ma la più comune è la
sua caduta in una vasca di rifiuti tossici, che gli sbianca
la pelle, trasformando i capelli in verdi e le labbra rosso
sangue. La sua deturpazione lo fa impazzire. Presentato come
l'antitesi completa del personaggio di Batman, il Joker è
stato più volte recensito criticamente come l'avversario
perfetto per il supereroe.
