Batman
of the future o Batman Beyond nella sua versione originale è
una serie televisiva animata di 52 episodi, 25 minuti, creata
dopo il personaggio di Bob Kane e Bill Finger nel 1939, in onda
tra il 10 gennaio 1999 e il 18 dicembre 2001 nel blocco di programmi
Kids 'WB su The WB.
Il
primo episodio della serie ci mostra Bruce Wayne, che non ha
più la forza fisica per continuare la sua crociata come
Batman, disarmato, finalmente in pensione. Venti anni dopo,
Terry McGinnis, un "difficile" adolescente, incontra
un ottantenne Bruce Wayne, ancora in vita, alle prese con una
banda di teppisti (caratteri jolly). Il giovane, piuttosto rissoso,
scappa via gli aggressori accanto a Wayne e accompagna Bruce
nella sua villa dove vive recluso, con il suo cane Ace per sola
compagnia. Lì, inavvertitamente, Terry McGinnis scopre
la Batcave e capisce che il suo ospite non è altro che
quello che prima era conosciuto come Batman.
Quando il
padre di Terry McGinnis, un dipendente della Wayne-Powers Industries,
scopre un traffico di armi biologiche orchestrato dal suo datore
di lavoro Derek Powers, viene ucciso. Il giovane si rivolge
a Bruce Wayne, l'azionista della compagnia, per chiedere aiuto,
ma gli consiglia di contattare la commissaria Barbara Gordon.
Terry McGinnis entra poi al Batcave di notte per rubare l'ultimo
completo di Batman: un equipaggiamento high-tech che gli ha
permesso di continuare il combattimento nonostante la sua età
avanzata. Dopo Terry McGinnis ha chiuso le azioni di Derek Powers,
il crimine e la corruzione imperante di nuovo nel cuore di Gotham
City, Bruce Wayne si impegna a lasciare Terry prendere la crociata
di Batman, sotto la sua tutela. Diventa il nuovo vigilante di
Gotham City.
Terry McGinnis
si trova ad affrontare il proprio gruppo di cattivi di Gotham
City del futuro: la voluttuosa mutaforma Inque, l'ipnotizzatore
Spellbinder, esperto di ultrasuoni stridore, gangster di nome
Bane radioattivo, l'assassino il curaro, l'organizzazione criminale
Cobra, il terrorista Mad Stan, la banda della famiglia Royal
Flush e lo stalker africano Stalker. In diverse occasioni, Terry
McGinnis trova anche di fronte vecchi nemici del suo mentore,
come Mr. Freeze, Bane (vecchio, morendo, il corpo distrutto
dal doping sostanza che gli ha dato la sua forza), multipla
centenario di Ra al Ghul , la Banda del Royal Flush, e persino,
nel film, un Joker risorto.
