Lara Croft è un personaggio immaginario e protagonista della
serie di videogiochi Tomb Raider e della serie derivata Lara Croft,
entrambi prodotti da Square Enix, la società che ha acquistato
la serie Tomb Raider di Eidos Interactive. Lara Croft è interpretata
come un'archeologa bella, intelligente e atletica che si avventura
in tutto il mondo in antiche tombe o rovine piene di pericoli. Creato
da Toby Gard mentre lavora per lo sviluppatore inglese Core Design,
il primo carattere è apparso nel gioco Tomb Raider, nel 1996.
E 'poi apparso anche in sequenze di adattamenti di videogiochi mini
stampati - serie di animazione, tre lungometraggi, interpretati due
volte da Angelina Jolie e più recentemente da Alicia Vikander,
nonché da prodotti correlati. Lara Croft è anche utilizzato
in promozioni di terze parti, tra cui pubblicità per TV e stampa,
nonché come portavoce di modelli. La promozione del personaggio
include un marchio di abbigliamento e accessori, figurine e presentazioni
di modelli di moda.
È il Core Design che è all'origine dello sviluppo del
personaggio e della serie. Ispirato all'artista pop Neneh Cherry e
al personaggio comico Tank Girl, Gard concepisce Lara Croft come risposta
agli stereotipi di personaggi femminili. La compagnia modifica il
personaggio per i seguenti titoli, apportando miglioramenti grafici
e aggiunte al gameplay, come nuove manovre e nuovi oggetti. Il ricevimento
molto misto per l'opera Tomb Raider: L'angelo delle tenebre del 2003
si traduce in un cambio di sviluppatore: la licenza è data
all'American Crystal Dynamics. Il nuovo sviluppatore porta il personaggio
a zero con la sua "nuova" serie di videogiochi. Crystal
Dynamics si impegna a rendere il personaggio credibile e modifica
le sue proporzioni fisiche e la sua capacità di interagire
con l'ambiente del gioco. Lara Croft è doppiato in francese
nella serie principale di Françoise Cadol fino al 2013 e poi
da Alice David dal riavvio. Tuttavia, Françoise Cadol continua
a doppiare il personaggio nella serie derivata.
La critica vede Lara Croft come un personaggio importante del videogioco
nella cultura popolare. Nel 2006, ha ricevuto una stella nella Walk
of Game ed è stata anche riconosciuta come "l'eroina dei
videogiochi umani di maggior successo" dal Guinness Book of Records.
Gli inizi del carattere sono molto ben accolti nel mondo di gioco,
ma la sua popolarità diminuisce gradualmente fino al riavvio
della serie nel 2006. Lara Croft è anche considerato un sex
symbol, una delle prime in questo ramo . L'influenza del personaggio
nel mondo dei videogiochi è discussa dalla critica.
